I tutor high school and introductory college chemistry, including material from general, honors and AP classes. Chemistry is a reason based science centered around a few fundamental concepts, and so I teach students to take a reason based approach to the subject. I first ensure students' foundations are solid, then work with students to build on those foundations while applying logic and critical thinking to solve problems and approach unfamiliar challenges. With this approach, students gain confidence in themselves and their knowledge and leave sessions better prepared to independently apply what they know.
I tutor foundational (middle school) Latin, primarily focusing on grammar, linguistic structure, translation and clarity, and vocabulary. The three key tricks to mastering Latin are pattern recognition, application of memorized material, and critical thinking. It is these skills that I work to hone with students in the context of the Latin language. In Latin tutoring sessions, students will add to, apply, and extend their knowledge of the language to a variety of challenges that help them to recognize these patterns and critically apply them to actual Latin translation.
I tutor students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Precalculus, and Calculus. Like chemistry, mathematics is a practice which extends foundational principles, such as Algebra, to a wide variety of different applications. In sessions, I work to reinforce foundational principles, teach how to extend the principles to harder problems, and help students to understand why concepts work the way they do. I also work in sessions to not only help students understand the material, but also to strengthen their confidence in working with mathematics to overcome barriers such as low self-confidence/esteem, anxiety, and/or fear of failure.
I tutor students in writing from middle school to the collegiate level in many different styles of writing. Writing is a practice that requires discipline, technique, and refinement to truly shine. In sessions, I work with students to hone their writing skills, including clarity of argument, thesis development, organization, sentence structure, and word choice. I also work with students to overcome common difficulties like writer's block, an unclear writing focus, or trouble getting started. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring past, ongoing, or upcoming writing to the session for the most benefit.
I encourage students to bring any material, including homework, essays, readings, or in-class assignments that would benefit their learning--my goal is to focus on students' academic needs. These materials also help me to see what their teachers expect and how I need to help students to ensure congruous learning.
